Sri Lankan parliament gets violent over UNP MP's anti government protest in UK

Sri Lankan parliament had to temporarily suspend its sessions today for about an hour after a tensed situation erupted following an attempt by governing party members to assault a main opposition United National Party (UNP) legislator.

The governing party MPs had attempted to manhandle UNP MP Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena, for allegedly leading the protest against President Mahinda Rajapaksa in the UK.

The opposition legislator is alleged of instigating pro-LTTE protests in London that led to the Oxford Union to cancel President Mahinda Rajapaksa's speech scheduled for today.

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa had to then suspend sittings for a while.

The government meanwhile has said it would present a resolution to remove Jayawardena from the parliament.

Chief Government Whip, Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has been quoted as saying that government will present a resolution to remove Dr. Jayawardena from the parliament.
