Sri Lanka Navy celebrates 60th anniversary

Sri Lanka Navy today celebrated its Diamond Jubilee with the participation of the country's Commander-In-Chief President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The main celebration of the Navy's 60th anniversary celebrations was held at the Colombo Light House premises today where President Rajapaksa conferred President's Colours to Northern Naval Command, Eastern Naval Command and Afloat Command of the Sri Lanka Navy, for their 60 years of immense contribution to the country. Sri Lanka Navy originally was established as Royal Ceylon Navy in 1950 and engaged in traditional duties until Sri Lanka Became a republic. In 1972, with the introduction of new constitution Royal Ceylon Navy was renamed as the Sri Lanka Navy.

The Navy rendered a decisive task in eliminating terrorism during the humanitarian operations last year.

First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Sri Lanka Navy Commander Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe, Air Force Commander Air Marshal Roshan Gunathilaka, Army Commander, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasooriya, Indian Navy Commander Admiral Nirmal Warma and Pakistan Navy Commander Admiral Noman Bashir, Ministers and MPs also participated.
