The standing committee of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) continues to dither over plans to improve the civic water supply system in this area. Earlier, the civic administration was looking forward to implement a build-operate-transfer (BOT) plan to patch up the city’s water supply system but it changed track again on Tuesday.
Standing committee chairman Arvind Shinde was speaking to reporters on Tuesday. He said, “The standing committee has asked the civic administration to invite global tenders to appoint a consultant for 24×7 water supply.”
Recently, the standing committee had rejected the proposal submitted by the municipal commissioner Mahesh Zagde regarding the appointment of a consultant, after receiving only one proposal from Tata Consultants. Tata sought Rs 37 crore as the compensation fee. At that time the municipal commissioner was asked to revise the plan considering all the possibilities of a BOT project plan.
The civic administration took stock of the situation and studied these possibilities. As per their plan, private bodies having adequate expertise and experience were expected to bid for the plan. These entities were supposed to form a supply system that would ensure evenhanded water supply for all citizens. The system was also supposed to tackle leakage problems, pilferage and wastage of water.
Now, that the civic body is thinking upon the consultant idea once again, global tenders are to be floated by the PMC.
